@theslowai: I ran the opening of Aristotle's Rhetoric through MyDetector, which advertises itself as the most accurate AI detector for content generated by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. On 688 words it returned 0% AI, 81% human, and 19% mixed, meaning it reckons roughly a fifth of the text involved AI. Rhetoric was written around 350 BCE, and the translation it read is W. Rhys Roberts's, published in 1924, so even on the most conservative dating these words predate any machine capable of writing by about a century. Two things I did not get to on camera. The passage it flagged is Aristotle arguing that judges should be allowed to decide as few things as possible, because feelings of friendship or hatred or self-interest make them lose any clear vision of the truth: a machine passing biased judgement flagged a warning about biased judgement. And the same site sells an AI Humanizer, with a Humanize the Text button sitting directly beneath your result. One company, both sides of the trade. Text from the MIT Classics archive, and you can repeat the whole thing in about two minutes. 19% is ok, I wouldn't say that it didn't work.

This made me think of Mark Twain stating "there's no such thing as an original idea" and maybe AI cannot be original in fact can't be programmed to understand original or create original

As an ex teacher, I used to have to keep an eye on how students produced their work and I can tell you AI detectors do not work, results vary from one detector to another. I have put work in I wrote in the mid 80s and it came back 86% AI 😳 I have even looked at image detectors, work I produced using inks and paint, again in the mid 80s, came back as AI. For text, there are tell tale signs, but that’s all you have to go on, still isn’t accurate.

It's so weird and frustrating. Academic texts I have written literally decades(!) ago are according to AI detectors 10-20% AI 🤣 I have no motivation anymore to write and publish... It's useless. Academia will die anyway. Greetings from Germany 👋🙂

By that logic it could be the case with texts of the public domain. 😬
