That argument works both ways though. You can say people believe in God because they need purpose, protection or a father figure. But I could just as easily say some people reject God because they need to feel independent, empowered and completely in control of their own lives. Neither proves anything. Explaining a psychological reason someone might WANT to believe or not believe doesn't tell us whether God actually exists. And different religions don't automatically disprove God either....they could just as easily be different cultures trying to understand the same thing.

Perhaps they believe that random phenomena cannot create a complex intelligent life. Imagine you see Taj Mahal and someone tells you it just got created on its own. Would you believe it? Maybe these philosophers felt the same way when they saw human beings or just life on earth for that matter.

Many of the religious "do's and don'ts" can be separated from mythology and are not based on religion at all. For example, "Don't lie to our neighbors, don't steal their sht, don't fck their wife ect.," are BASIC expectations other humans have of you when living in close proximity to them. They are only proof that being a good neighbor benefits us all as a species.

They were trying to explain the natural world. How else would an ancient human explain lighting, rain, tornados. Someone needs to be causing it. In time, religion evolved with civilization to fit the new reality.
