@richmanparadise: At some point, you stop noticing how much you're being taxed. Carl Higbie argues that taxes are built into almost every part of modern life. You earn money and pay taxes. You spend that money and pay taxes again. You buy a home, own property, invest, or purchase everyday goods, and there can be another tax attached to it. His point is that the system can feel like an endless loop where money repeatedly flows back to the government. America's history makes the idea especially interesting. A tax on tea became one of the sparks behind the American Revolution, with the Boston Tea Party becoming a symbol of resistance against taxation without representation. Today, taxes are so deeply woven into everyday life that most people barely think about them anymore. Higbie's message challenges that acceptance and asks us to pay attention to how much of our income and spending ultimately goes toward taxes. Whether you agree with his argument or not, the bigger point is worth considering: when something becomes normal, we can stop questioning it.
