A controversial statement by an imam in Ghana has sparked public outrage, with many Ghanaians calling on the Ghana Police Service to investigate and take action over remarks suggesting that anyone who criticizes Prophet Muhammad should be beheaded. But beyond the controversy itself lies a much bigger question: How should African governments respond when religious preaching appears to promote intolerance, extremism or threats to public peace? In this video, we examine the growing debate in Ghana and connect it to Burkina Faso, where authorities under President Ibrahim Traoré have taken action against some religious figures accused of preaching messages considered threatening to national peace and security. This discussion is NOT about Islam or Muslims as a whole. Millions of Muslims across Ghana, Burkina Faso and Africa peacefully practice their faith every day. The focus is on the small number of radical voices whose rhetoric can potentially fuel intolerance, division and extremism—and how such rhetoric can affect the wider image of peaceful Muslim communities. As West Africa continues to confront terrorism and violent extremism, the debate over radical preaching, religious tolerance, freedom of expression and national security is becoming increasingly important. Where should the line be drawn between religious expression and rhetoric that threatens public safety? And what responsibility do governments, religious leaders and communities have in preventing radicalization before it becomes a security crisis? Watch the full video and join the conversation. #Ghana #BurkinaFaso #WestAfrica #Islam #ReligiousTolerance
