In a world where we’re investing $200 billion into AI, sending rockets to Mars, and even trying to bio-hack our way into immortality, there’s a rather important scientific discovery that has gotten lost in the mix. The *evidence* that life continues after death. Naturally this topic brings skepticism, but you might be surprised to hear that there is actual a field that is dedicated towards researching this subject. Now approaching its 50th anniversary, the field of near-death studies has studied tens of thousands of people who have clinically died, but then came back to life, often under extraordinary circumstances. What is being explained in this clip is “veridical perception”. In simple terms, veridical perception means floating outside of your body, and being able to see things happening in a room that would have been impossible otherwise. This is most remarkable in hospital settings, when patients were verified by doctors to be clinically dead for minutes to hours. No heartbeat. No brain activity. In some cases, not only were patients clinically dead, but their eyes were taped shut like the patient being described in this clip. It’s hard not to read a book like The Self Does Not Die, and come away with the realization that life continuing after death is a fact. So why isn’t this talked about more? Perhaps it’s because few things have bigger implications on reality than life continuing after death. And that’s uncomfortable. But pushing back on the evidence is actually par for the course in science, at least initially. For example, brain plasticity is foundational to neuroscience today, but even that was once laughed at by the leading scientists of the 1960s and 1970s. Click the link in our bio for the full episode with Dr. Jan Holden, who is a leading scientist in the field of near-death studies. She is the president of the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IADNS), and the editor of the scholarly peer-reviewed Journal of Near Death Studies. Now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube!
