She used her mother's .357 Magnum handgun and then shot her stepfather, Heath Smylie, when he returned home. After the incident, Carly invited friends over via social media to “check out the body,” asking if they were scared to see it. Heath later called the police, and Carly fled the scene but was arrested nearby. Police found that she had hidden the murder weapon and tampered with evidence. During the trial, mental health experts testified that Carly had long struggled with depression and emotional issues, but the court ruled that her actions were driven by revenge.
