In 1885, nobody wanted a Van Gogh. He had come to painting late, fired from an art dealership, failed as a teacher, failed as a preacher in a Belgian mining district. He started drawing seriously at 27 because there was nothing left. By 1885 he was 31, living with his parents in the village of Nuenen, painting weavers and farmhands in dark colors nobody would buy. His father had considered having him committed. The money came from Paris. His younger brother Theo, an art dealer, sent an allowance every month, and Vincent sent letters back—over 600 of them, about color, God, debt, and how to keep working when nothing sells. Even Theo told him the paintings weren't sellable. In January 1885, Vincent answered the doubt in one image about wheat, then went back to work. Months later, in that same village, he painted The Potato Eaters—his first masterpiece. Nobody bought that either. The Starry Night, the Sunflowers, the self-portraits: all still ahead of him, and he would sell almost none of it. One sale is documented in his lifetime. He died in 1890, at thirty-seven, still unknown. Theo died six months after him. The letters survived because Theo kept every one. His widow, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, spent the rest of her life on what he left—organizing the exhibitions, publishing the letters in 1914. The Starry Night now hangs in MoMA. The wheat was wheat. Send this to someone who needs a reminder, or save it as a reminder to yourself. #vangogh #letters #hope #starrynight #BookTok
