Coming from a former British soldier who has actually served in Afghanistan, accessing TikTok is very easy and used via VPN. I have seen some truly beautiful parts of Afghanistan, but I have also witnessed some truly horrific realities there. And that is precisely why I find Alex’s content so deeply upsetting. What troubles me most is watching her use moving to Afghanistan as some kind of flex, while glamourising a country in which Afghan women and girls have endured unimaginable restrictions, violence and oppression. There is an enormous difference between an American woman choosing to move to Afghanistan and an Afghan woman being born into a system she did not choose and may have very little power to escape. Alex may have chosen to live there, but choice itself is the privilege. She entered that country knowing that, ultimately, she has an American passport and a life outside Afghanistan that she chose to leave. Millions of Afghan women were never afforded that choice. You cannot use your own privileged experience to invalidate the suffering of women whose circumstances are fundamentally different from yours. And you cannot glamourise restrictions on women’s rights simply because you personally believe you can tolerate them. Having witnessed firsthand the way women can be treated there, I find it incredibly difficult to watch their reality being romanticised for social media. It feels deeply disrespectful not only to the women still living under those restrictions, but also to those who risked everything to escape them. To the women of Afghanistan: your experiences are real. Your suffering is valid. Your loss of freedom matters. And no amount of carefully curated social-media content can erase what so many of you have endured 💜💜💜💜💜

I’m Afghan and Pashtun, just like many of the Taliban, so I know the culture and I know what they say. I have family who have actually spoken to Taliban members, and they are even worse in person. We have a family friend whose 13year old daughter is being forced to marry the man who raped her. And the Taliban have said women should be kept in cages to prevent men from giving in to their lust. They’re literally blaming women and restricting them because of men’s behavior, even when the woman is a child and a rape victim. How can anyone defend that?
