That makes a lot of sense! like literally their "spirit". I initially thought it could be their insecurties, not exactly their actual mindset. maybe katara & zuko fear to have wasted their youth because of the responsibilties they were given. toph fearing to be depending like as a toddler. aang to be still the boy who ran. and sokka, still the boy who had to proof himself. but I like your take more

Probably fan service aang and sokka never saw katara and zuko that age before and for toph it might because they wouldn’t have needed that spirit to take them up since aang and toph could have earth bended a huge pillar

I thought it represented Toph, Aang, and Sokka being emotionally stunted because of trauma. Toph was coddled from birth because of her blindness, Aang lost his people as a child, and Katara was the parentified younger sister.
