I had a student who handed in an obvious AI job. Gave them a chance, they doubled down. Sent the work to the parent and ask them to quiz the kid. I supplied the CORRECT answers to the parent and let’s just say, the kid came back the next day with a hand written essay and a sullen look. Parent thanked me and requested all essays be hand written from here on out.

Way too easy on them. If you can't talk about it at all, you didn't do it. Plagiarism gets a 0. Depending on the kid, I may write home to parents explaining that this was their one chance and they can rewrite it. But this is why I have students do all work that I am taking on for marks in class. If it goes home, it's just practice.

Step 1, check Version History Step 2 (optional), ask them what a few big words in the essay mean. Step 3, give them a zero. There is no step 4.

I had this happen last year with a student, and frustratingly, their parent backed them, even though everything said it was AI (including the version history). Admin had to get involved. 🙄

Way to generous. In my school, even elementary, plagiarism was a serious offense. Not only would it be an automatic 0, no redo, but also discipline (usually in school suspension) as it violated our ethics agreement. Kids that did it once NEVER did it again. That's also when parents considered us guilty until proven innocent.
