I have taken 66 dance classes in the last 30 days, and there is actually a reason beyond the fact that I freaking love dancing. I know I’m going to seek dopamine. I also know what happens when I am not intentional about where I get stimulation, pleasure, novelty, connection, and reward. I scroll. I start tinkering with my business when nothing actually needs fixing. I’ll invent new offers and complicate things. I reach for food when I am not hungry. I turn on Netflix when I am not even interested in watching anything. And yes, sometimes I dive headfirst into a bag of cheddar Ruffles because apparently that feels like an excellent idea. 😂 As an empath, I am constantly taking in information from the environments and people around me, and I have learned that I need intentional outlets for all of that energy. For me, tears, laughter, and movement are three of the biggest. And right now, dance is doing a LOT of heavy lifting. It gives me movement, music, novelty, challenge, connection, community, laughter, and joy all at once. More importantly, when I intentionally create those experiences for myself, I notice that I am much less likely to unconsciously go looking for a hit somewhere that does not actually support me. That is why dance is not something I earn after I finish all the “important” things. Dance is one of the things that helps me do the important things well. You definitely do not need to take 66 dance classes in a month. 😂 I mean… I’ll admit this is probably excessive. But if you are an empath who finds yourself constantly reaching for something when you are overwhelmed, depleted, bored, or emotionally full, I want you to get curious about it. Where are you currently getting your dopamine, and is it actually giving you what you need? I talk about this - and a whole lot more of what it actually feels like to live as an empath - in the first podcast episode of Unfiltered Empath on Your Yes Filled Life. Episode 285. #UnfilteredEmpath #Empath #Dopamine #DanceLife #YourYesFilledLife
