The word became a weapon—used to mock, bully, dehumanize, and humiliate children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It became so harmful that the medical community, disability advocates, and families pushed to remove it from clinical language. In 2010, the United States replaced “mental retardation” with “intellectual disability” in federal law through Rosa’s Law, recognizing that words can either reinforce dignity or strip it away. That’s why words like “libtard” are so harmful. The insult isn’t just aimed at the person you’re arguing with. It works by comparing them to a group of people with intellectual disabilities—as if having an intellectual disability is something shameful, laughable, or less worthy of respect. People with intellectual disabilities are not the punchline. They are our children, siblings, classmates, patients, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. They deserve the same dignity and respect as anyone else. We can disagree passionately about politics without using a disability as an insult.
