99.9% of people who work in PE will never realize those returns. Especially now, where the holding period keeps going up and up, it’s now an average of 7 years before capital is returned to LPs. If money is your goal, best bet is starting your own business and becoming the reason PE/Banks get their payday and sell your company. Bankers and PE guys are suckers at the end of the day, the entrepreneurs are the real winners in every m&a transaction

He’s right. Say fund in Y5 makes distributes $200M on a $2B fund with a 8% soft hurdle, fund is taking home carried interest of 15%, so that’s $30M. Kinda crazy.
