I'm an amateur writer currently writing my first draft, I have this story about two exes getting back together. I believe the story won't come from that premise alone think it'll come on the character's belief system. Like if the guy did something horrible and believed he didn't deserve love anymore, or the girl who's deeply hurt she believed people will take advantage if you trust too much. The result? tension that doesn't come from plot structure but form the character itself which is much more compelling, at least for me.

That's actually a really good bit of advice. Kind of takes the pressure off bc I mostly start writing individual scenes then end up berating myself for not having figured out the entirety of the plot ahead of time 😅 So I do appreciate the shift in perspective (since I hadn't rly considered this before)! 👍🏻✨️

My stories usually start with some type of concept, single scene, single moment, or a vague idea of a journey, and then I sit down with a notebook and go "but why? but why? but why? but WHY?" (sprinkle in some whats, hows whos and whens). She goes to X. Why? because Y is important. but why? because Z happened... and so on, until I have a story. And then story structure can inspire some things. "What's her all is lost? how do you break that person and what pulls her out? oooh. what if...") or whatever else. And then I draft, discover my prep was all wrong and there's something juicier to it and around in circles we go 😂

Story structure is just that - a structure. We have to muse over how our story fits thematically with the structure. We must figure out how structure - the principle of - can be harnessed in order for our plot to strike at the right moments.

I try to write ts myself, actually. A protagonist the engine of your story. And the engine of your protagonist has to be some sort of belief.

My way of doing it it’s literally just structure my idea. It all starts from a an idea, a couple of scene idea and from that I flesh out the characters, I push the idea so I can identify deeper meaning, themes, belief systems etc. Then I can create a general structure of what I want to say with my story, and what my story should be at the core. Once you got this down, the rest come naturally

You have mentioned in the past challenging their belief systems which I have now spent so much time on what everyone beliefs and how to challenge them or even break them. But I wrote a scene that breaks one character’s belief but accidentally reinforces another character’s belief.

I don't know if I get it right, but my story started because my MC believed, that if she'll be strong enough she'll be able to find her sister, who was kidnapped. But the world around her shows that there are always new limits and boundaries for her, and always sth will stop her from achieving her goal just by herself. That goal made her kind of selfish and egoistic, but to eventually achieve what she wants she need to look for allies and support. She also have to deal with the reality and that her goal might be... actually not possible to achieve by her. Not in her short life... She wants to find her sister not because she loves her, but cuz she is blaming herself for what happened with her and believe she is the only person who can make her happy. Because of her journey (both physical and emotional one) she realised that this might not be the truth and slowly started to change this goal to sth different - to change the world around her (the way she is able to) with faith, that eventually that will reach her sister. She never lose hope to do it, just stop hiperfixating on it😁
