I've noticed it too, and I get told I'm crazy for it. it's because korea views everyone as either "korean" or "foreigner," and whether people want to admit it or not there is an unspoken "foreigner hierarchy" in korean society. (I'm not saying I agree with its existence, just that it does exist. anyone who says it doesn't has their head in the sand). the closer you are to the top of this heirarchy, the closer you are to "koreanness"; the closer you are to "koreanness" the closer you are to social power. the strong in-group, out-group dynamics really encourage this extreme crabs in a bucket pick-me behavior. and the easiest ways to access "koreanness" is to present yourself as speaking korean better than other foreigners, to "live korean culture" better the other foreigners, to get a man to acknowledge you as such. honestly I think the people who choose to play this game ultimately end up perpetually miserable and insecure, and the ones who recognize it and opt out are a lot more fulfilled and happy in their lives here.

I’ve been in Korea for over 3 years and I only see foreigners competition online 😅 idk if it’s because I’m surrendered by my peer students and we were too stress to finish our thesis but it might change when I start working

One of the reasons why I wanna avoid cities with a ton of foreigners if I’m ever able to go to Korea lol I just know most of it is gonna be toxic as heck😭 plus what I find the most annoying is people hating on u just because u speak Korean and get the attention of korean hosts without having to spend a fortune 🤦🏻♀️like use your jealousy to learn and not to hate on me 🥲

I totally agree with you. I went a few times to Korea and I noticed through the years how BAD the reputation of foreigner girls has become because of some girls … like some men will stop you in the street and assume that you’re here for them and kinda stalk you until you acknowledge them. Let us be please 🥲 I just want to enjoy my time here, going to beautiful historic places, cute coffees and eat good food … NOT FOR THE MEN

😭 Everytime I walk past a foreigner girly I just want to say "Hi" but if I am not at work... I get the stink eye 😭 I am here 8 years... and my Korean is not as proficient as it should be (in my eyes), but I don't give s... to people who don't speak it at all, or fluent. if someone is fluent it makes me a little jealous... because the truth is working Full Time, in a none korean environment does not help with your korean and usually you're exhausted after 50-60hrs work week...to learn after work. I only started learning it properly after starting and needing to communicate in korean everyday! Yes you should learn it if you plan to be here long term... but it doesn't help if there are people who look down on you, for being slower in learning, because you don't have 8hrs a day to intensively learn korean... well all in all... i think it is mostly online... i only ever met 2 people that made me feel shit about not speaking korean... and I was there 3 months 😂 hahaha

This behavior crosses international boundaries… I was in Italy with a group of foreigners who were working as models there and apparently they make fun of girls who model in Asia because apparently if you’re not good enough for Europe you’re forced to “model” in Korea or Japan

You're talking all truth. This is actually why I stopped liking kpop and anything associated with Korea despite being familiar with Korean culture almost my whole life. The idealisation and fetishizing is gross. The communities are absolutely toxic and honestly it's embarrassing at this point.
