I’m learning today that people don’t know what a jump seat is. It is an additional seat in the cockpit where an off duty pilot can ride to another airport. So let’s say a pilot lives in Portland, but he was scheduled to pilot a flight out of San Francisco. He would ride in the jump seat from Portland to San Francisco. Basically how pilots commute.

Jump seat should not be used for off duty pilots. They should sit back with other passengers. Jump seat are usually reserved for duty pilots who serve rotations because of long haul flights.
