My sons only an hour and a half away. I thought we were alright for the goodbye. I was sad on the ride home. That was last Friday. Saturday night he showed up at home at midnight, said he was lonely kind of casually, and stayed through Sunday afternoon. When it was time for him to go back to school. He hugged me, stopped and stared at the front door and broke down just sobbing like he was a little boy again. He was lonely and really homesick. My heart broke in a million pieces. We talked for a few minutes and i held it in. He got in his car and sat there just bawling while I secretly looked out the window and sobbed. A week later, he is fine. Already has friends, hanging in other dorm rooms, going to The Dining Hall together. But I died inside watching my boy cry like that. I haven't seen that since he was little

i cried for a straight hour after my mom left until there was a knock at my door, and it was her again with an armful of groceries because she didn’t want me to be alone and also hungry. :(

to everyone moving into college for the first time: DONT HIDE IN YOUR ROOM GO MAKE FRIENDS!!! it's so important to not isolate yourself, make friends with people in your dorms, the cafeteria, on your walks, just MEET people even if they just serve as a familiar face. and remember you are LOVED and SO IMPORTANT 🩷 congrats on moving on to the next step

I moved into the dorms September 2015. My mom wouldn’t let me leave my dorm room and go down to the parking lot to say goodbye because it would have been super hard for us both. So I watched her drive away from my window until I couldn’t see her car anymore. I called her while looking at the window and begged her to turn back around and get me because I couldn’t do it. She said “Ashanna, yes you can. You came this far”. I stayed, graduated in 2019, and she passed away in 2021. I will remember move in day forever.
