In high school, we had read The Things They Carried. During one of the classes, my teacher had invited a man who had been in Charlie Company at My Lai. Hearing him describe the massacre as an “incident”, downplay his and his fellow criminals’ conduct, and portray himself as a victim of the circumstances is still one of the most nauseating spectacles I’ve ever been a witness to. Even as a ~16 year old it turned my stomach; I’ll never forget being held after class and yelled at by my teacher for not being respectful enough during the discussion. I thought I was being respectful by not spitting right in his decrepit, murderous face, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the largest "recognized" massacre by the usa in the 20th century. it's very important we list it as recognized, as there are ones worse that the us doesn't recognize.

unbelievably refreshing to hear an educational video use actual words to not diminish the atrocities committed

My Lai wasn’t the only one - it’s just the one we admit to. Every American should read “Kill Anything That Moves: The Real Story of the Vietnam War” by Nick Turse. It’s horrifying what we did there and a lot of it was done by just a few psychopaths

I’m starting to question when soldiers “don’t like to talk about their deployment”. Starting to feel less like a macho thing and more of a let’s not expose our war crimes thing.

As a Vietnamese American, this is one of many reasons why I never understood reverence for veterans… at 10 I had the thought “why are we celebrating people who went into my mother country and killed us?” It was very odd to deal with people celebrating what happened in Vietnam. They’ll say with gusto (‘NAM!). It’s always pissed me off personally to hear people refer to my country as “Nam” because it reminds me of those same veterans who glorify that war.

If you’re ever in HCM city, go to the war remnants museum. It has a lot about this massacre and its devastating but very interesting

wild the only death on the us side was a suicide bc he didn’t want to rape people, and if he didn’t commit suicide he would’ve been shot no doubt

We forced an entire generation of teens off to a country on the other side of the world with little vetting and they watched thousands of their friends die while they worried if they were ever getting home it's not shocking that some went crazy

I’m a historian of imperialism, violence and genocide. The book “Kill Anything That Moves” was too graphic and horrible for my to finish. And honestly, that almost never happens. Vietnam was gruesome and inhumane beyond modern belief
