PEELING BACK THE LAYERS: What UV light actually does to your skin 🔬 Looking at real human skin from our cadaver lab - this is from the mid-back and you can already see freckles and sun damage on the surface. Your skin has 3 main layers: -Epidermis (outermost) -Dermis (middle) -Hypodermis/subcutaneous (deepest) Check this out - the epidermis is only about the thickness of a sheet of paper! That thin top layer you see on the cut edge. The majority of what you're looking at is actually the dermis. But here's where it gets interesting: Within that paper-thin epidermis, you have keratinocytes (the main cells) constantly dividing and renewing. But at the bottom layer, you'll find melanocytes - the MVP cells that produce melanin. One melanocyte can contact over 30 keratinocytes with its extensions, dumping melanin into them. This gives your skin its color AND provides UV protection. The more melanin your melanocytes produce = darker skin pigment = more natural sun protection. This is just the beginning of understanding how UV damage and skin cancer develop. The cellular mechanisms are incredible when you see the actual anatomy.
