we don't hit or yell at our dog but when he does something he isn't supposed to he instantly does the same behavior. ie he knows he shouldn't be doing it and feels guilty that he was caught doing it. he even tries to hide the evidence.

She didn't explain it well. Dogs aren't smart enough to connect their bad action to your anger. It's happening too far apart. They are just scared because you're angry and they see/hear it in that moment. They're not connecting it to because something they broke 6 hours ago.
