@babywhisperer77: Replying to @🍉 Why do I think moms stop breastfeeding in the early weeks! Tell me your thoughts #lactationconsultant #ibclc #breastfeeding #breastfeedingsupport #newmom
To me I almost quit in the first 3 months because my nipples were raw that was my reality she latched really well but every time she latched it felt like a million razor blades in my nipples I would cryyy but I’m 6 months strong and my nipples are good now it’s just going through that pain im glad I pushed through

Lack of support!!! Being questioned why the baby is eating so often… being told maybe you’re just not making enough (clusterfeeding) and having other responsibilities. My husband was amazing and cooked, cleaned and did everything to hold me and our family together. When a lactation consultant told me to give up breastfeeding he said we were getting another opinion the NEXT day. When I triple fed he brought me snacks. I would have given up without the knowledge and his support. I knew what to expect and it was still hard

Totally agree that lack of support and education is a huge reason. I actually think breastfeeding education should start BEFORE baby arrives, because trying to learn everything while newly postpartum and overwhelmed is so much harder.
But I also think social media plays a MASSIVE role. It makes mums think pumping huge amounts like 10–16oz is normal and that pumping 2–4oz means they have low supply, when that can be completely normal. It can also make mums obsessed with seeing exactly how many ounces baby drinks because you can’t measure that at the breast.
Then there’s the other extreme: breastfeeding is either portrayed as this effortless, beautiful fairytale, or you constantly hear “I switched to formula for my mental health and everything got better.” That can be completely valid for that individual, but everyone has a different experience and tolerance for those difficult early weeks.
Breastfeeding can be HARD, especially at the beginning. I think realistic education, support and expectations before birth would help so many mums feel more prepared rather than thinking they’re failing because their experience doesn’t look like social media. 🤍

It’s so frustrating… my family would not stop telling to give my baby formula because my milk wasn’t “filling her up”

Meeting with an LC in the first 1-2 weeks after leaving hospital should be standard, similar to well baby checks or 6 week pp OB appt

this was me 100% - I didn’t understand it takes a couple days for milk to come in and it’s NORMAL to have to supplement formula for that time. but you can return to bf! I gave up because I thought I wasn’t producing enough for my baby

breastfeeding is painful for the first two weeks to a month.
your nipples literally get sores but as time goes it really gets easier.
you start enjoying it too❤️

I had a conversation with a formula feeding momma yesterday, she said she had to supplement with formula since day 1 because she didn’t have enough milk for baby, and then had to quit breastfeeding at all because she didn’t have supply. I of course didn’t say anything other than offer support, but i knew that the reason she didn’t have supply was because she supplemented even though her body was making the perfect amount of milk for her newborn ☹️the lack of education is so sad!

how can I help my body produce more milk? I breastfed and formula fed my first for about 2 months before switching to just formula cause I wasnt producing enough. I just gave birth yesterday and the same thing is happening again. I want to exclusively breastfeed but even pumping I dont get anything

I saw an IBCLC while I’m still pregnant at 36 weeks and I so recommend it! We had an hour and a half long appointment where we touched on my goals and then all education from the anatomy of the breast to how milk is made! And she explained what to expect in the few days and weeks. I feel so much more confident going in having a plan and knowing they are a phone call away!

Education was huge. No one taught me anything the first time. Then being told to triple feed killed it and made my ppd horrible. With my daughter it’s been so much better since I learned so much AFTER I gave up

Less than 24 hours after leaving the hospital the pediatrician told me to start pumping every 2 hours because my daughter lost too much weight. I had no idea how to pump so that was already so exhausting I couldn’t even fathom trying to latch too. Thankfully I was able to go to a ton of lactation appointments and a support group and by 10 weeks was exclusively breastfeeding. Almost 9 months in now and so glad I didn’t give up when I really wanted to!

I never had support or help, I breastfed for 17 months blindly and having no clue what I was doing except I knew my baby was eating. Now on #3 and you’ve taught me more than a hospital could’ve ever taught me!

So true!! I live in Belgium. My midwife told me I had low supply just because my baby was clusterfeeding during the first week. she told me I had to top up with formula. thank god I knew better!

For me the first week of breastfeeding was more painful than anyone made it out to be. Like soul crushingly painful. With baby 3 weeks finally made it through that phase and now he’s 3m old still breastfeeding. But it was rough.

I unfortunately have lack of support. It sucks because I could do it, I have the knowledge of breastfeeding and everything. But I have lack of support. It suuuuucks.

Why i stopped early : 1. I was so fed up to have my daughter at breast all day long, 2. I was leaking like crazy, had to change multiple time a day, 3. My daughter slept only 30min / 1hour at night but when we started formula she slept for 3-4 hours straight …

Education is so key. First baby I stopped after less than a week because I thought my milk wasn’t coming in & started with formula. I knew nothing about feeding on demand because all I heard was every 2-3 hours. 2nd baby now and I’m 2 months EBF & going strong
