Uganda has approved the possible deployment of its troops to Gaza as part of a proposed international stabilisation force. And here's what caught my attention: the request reportedly came from the Trump administration. So I'm asking myself: Why Uganda? And what does Uganda expect to gain from getting involved in Gaza? And now the situation is even more complicated because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly rejected the proposed plan in its current form, raising questions about whether and when this international force could actually be deployed. But honestly, this got me thinking. Africa has countries that are bleeding right now. Sudan is suffering one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to experience devastating conflict. South Sudan remains fragile. So why is it so difficult for Africa to mobilise with that same urgency when the crisis is happening on African soil? And before anyone misunderstands me as attacking Uganda, let me be clear: Uganda has contributed significantly to peacekeeping in Africa, especially in Somalia. My question is about priorities. If African countries can mobilise personnel to help deal with crises thousands of kilometres away, why do we still struggle to organise a strong collective African response when our own countries are bleeding? And this actually makes me question something bigger: What does Pan-Africanism really mean if it doesn't include collective security? Because we have the African Union. We have regional security organisations. We have the African Standby Force. We have African soldiers with years of peacekeeping experience. So it's not that Africa doesn't have the people or the institutions. What we seem to lack is the political will, the financing and the unity to make collective African security work effectively. And that's the contradiction that bothers me. We talk about “Africa for Africans.” We talk about African unity. We talk about one Africa. But when Sudan is bleeding, when parts of Congo are bleeding, when other African countries are facing serious security threats... why can't we mobilise with the same urgency to protect our own people? And I'm not saying Uganda should ignore Gaza. I'm asking a bigger question: Why hasn't Africa built a security system strong enough to respond to African crises without constantly depending on outside powers? Because Pan-Africanism cannot only be about our history, our culture and our political speeches. It has to mean that when one African country is in serious trouble, the rest of Africa has the capacity and the will to stand with it. We don't have a shortage of African soldiers. What we have is a shortage of collective African security.
