People on the east side, such as the Tokyo area, are quiet, But people in the Kansai area , they like chatting. They often chat with other people in public baths.

i hate that people always say it’s super quiet on trains. Like yah maybe in the morning on certain lines but when I was in japan there was people talking on 90% of trains we went on in every city we went to. And it was always Japanese people never tourists

I’ve noticed that people are especially expected to be quiet on trains during commute times and in their day-to-day lives, but it’s a lot more relaxed on weekends, outside of rush hours, or on trains going to tourist destinations

Most of the strict etiquette rules in Japan only apply to Tokyo. Go anywhere else and you’ll see people whispering to each other on the train, not following the right staircase left staircase rule, etc.

Japanese people tend to read the room, so trains are usually quiet during the morning and evening rush hours. But when the atmosphere is appropriate for talking, we enjoy having normal conversations too.
