@indigorif999: Your parents unknowingly trained you to become emotionally avoidant. Every time you tried to express how you felt and were told you were “being disrespectful,” “talking back,” or “you’re just a kid, you don’t know what you’re talking about”… You learned that expressing yourself = conflict. So you started suppressing your emotions instead of communicating them. You stopped speaking up when something bothered you. You stopped questioning things that didn’t feel right. You learned to keep the peace instead of standing up for yourself. You became afraid of being misunderstood, rejected, or labeled as disrespectful. And now, as an adult, you might struggle to communicate your needs, set boundaries, express your beliefs, or even tell people when they’ve hurt you. The crazy part? Your parents may not have been intentionally trying to hurt you. They were often repeating the same patterns they learned growing up. But understanding where the pattern came from doesn’t mean you have to keep carrying it. You’re allowed to use your voice now. You’re allowed to disagree. You’re allowed to have boundaries. You’re allowed to express anger, sadness, discomfort, and vulnerability without feeling guilty for it. Healing isn’t just about forgiving your parents. Sometimes it’s about finally giving yourself permission to say what you weren’t allowed to say as a child. Your voice was never the problem. You were just taught to silence it.

Telling a child to stay in a child’s place all their life then when they turn 18 pushing them out into the world and expecting them to just “Figure it out “ has always been wild to me. 😒

“You had a great childhood” “you had this and that”. You laid down and did what you were supposed to as a parent. You chose that. But mentally emotionally and sometimes psychically you abused me. And still do

It isn’t just the black community, if your parents were raised by the boomers they’re likely the same way. My mom is white but I relate to all of this. Then she’d call me names for NOT standing up for myself outside the home. But I was forced by HER to shrink and not express myself to NOT get the belt, yelled at, mocked and threatened.

Gaslighting came from the oppressors. It is forced! however, we can all learn and grow! The US during a certain time was grounded in gaslighting, hypocrisy, projection, unaccountability, and any manipulation you can think of to maintain a colonizers narrative! 💯

Hey friend! As a therapist and as someone who is healing from parental trauma as well, I wanna say I’m so proud of you and I can’t wait to see our generation continue to overcome our trauma and become the better and healthier parents we needed as kids for our kids, also do you like anime?

I remember my mom blatantly lied about something and I called her out on it and my dad was like "don't call your mom a liar." Mind you I didn't call her a liar I just said she lied about something. But I was disrespectful smh
