GLP-1 research is getting much bigger than weight loss. One of the most interesting conversations I had at EASD was during a private scientific roundtable with Lilly’s leadership and a small group of physicians. We talked about something I think deserves more attention: the gap between what researchers initially set out to study and what clinicians are observing in real-world patient care. Sometimes patients report improvements in symptoms or conditions that weren’t part of the original clinical trials. Those observations can raise important questions, but they still need to be studied before we can say whether the medication is responsible. Now, research is expanding into areas like pain and physical function, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and women’s health, including the PERIODS trial investigating tirzepatide in PMOS (formerly PCOS). And one of the biggest unanswered questions is whether potential benefits in these conditions are driven by weight loss, effects of the medication itself, or some combination of both. That distinction matters, especially as we think about which patients might benefit from these treatments in the future. There’s a lot we still don’t know. But these are exactly the kinds of questions I’m glad researchers are beginning to investigate. Research in these areas is ongoing. Investigational uses should not be interpreted as established benefits or approved indications. #GLP1 #GLP1Research #EASD2026 #ObesityMedicine #MetabolicHealth
