The 1971 Sudanese Communist Party Coup On July 19, 1971, a number of officers affiliated with the Sudanese Communist Party led a military coup against the regime of President Jaafar Nimeiri. The coup leaders briefly seized power in Khartoum and announced the formation of a new leadership for the country. However, the coup did not last long. Forces loyal to Nimeiri regained control of the country after about three days, on July 22, 1971. Following the coup's failure, the government launched a widespread campaign against the communists, and a number of party leaders and participating officers were executed, most notably Abdel Khaliq Mahjoub and Hashim al-Atta. The 1971 coup intensified the conflict between Nimeiri's regime and the Communist Party and had a significant impact on the course of Sudanese politics throughout the 1970s. . . . #sudan
