This surprises people, because Dawn is marketed as effective, gentle, and safe. But when I look at products through an oncology and prevention lens, I’m not just asking “does it work?” I’m asking “what am I repeatedly exposing myself to over years?” The main concern with many conventional dish soaps (including Dawn) isn’t one single labeled ingredient — it’s what can be present behind the scenes. The ingredients and contaminants I personally avoid: • Ethoxylated surfactants (like sodium laureth sulfate) These are effective cleaners, but they can be contaminated during manufacturing with 1,4-dioxane. • 1,4-Dioxane This is not added intentionally and is not required to be listed on labels, but it is classified as a probable human carcinogen. It’s been linked to liver tumors in animal studies and is easily absorbed through the skin with repeated exposure. • Synthetic fragrance (“fragrance” or “parfum”) This single word can represent dozens of undisclosed chemicals, including VOCs and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The cancer concern here is not acute toxicity — it’s chronic inflammatory and hormonal signaling over time. • Preservatives + stabilizers Individually low risk, but when combined with frequent daily use, skin contact, and hot water (which increases absorption), exposure adds up. As an oncology provider, I think in terms of dose, duration, and route of exposure. Washing dishes once? Low concern. Bare-hand washing, daily, for years? That’s a different conversation. This is why I personally use Branch Basics. What I like about it: • no ethoxylated surfactants • no synthetic fragrance • no preservatives linked to hidden contaminants • minimal, transparent ingredient list • one concentrate used across the home (less total chemical load) Is Dawn causing cancer? There’s no evidence it directly causes cancer when used as directed. But cancer prevention is rarely about one product. It’s about reducing avoidable, repetitive exposures where safer alternatives exist. This is the same framework I use with patients — not fear, not perfection, just risk reduction where it’s realistic. Education only. Not medical advice.
