Moved here 7y ago and this was the weirdest thing ever. Now I’m used to it, but it’s the way people show status. When they’re 40+ talking about their high school is usually because they haven’t achieved much though

It’s a way to ask what socioeconomic class your family and likely you belong too… it’s very classist

It’s an indicator of status here sadly. They are checking if you were either smart enough to get into a selective school, or rich enough for private school in a wealthy suburb. Here, unfortunately, it can say more about your background then the degree you’re studying since there are 4 unis year that aren’t necessarily difficult to get into with a decent ATAR

It's networking. That's why it's important to send your children to an elite school. Who you know definitely makes a difference with where you go in life.

I’m not from Sydney but live in Sydney, I also think this is soo weird. Like idgaf what school you went too, I’d rather know what your passions are, what your interested in and your values

Why is it women ask about height?

Because they went to some elite private school and want to work out if you’re “on their level”. I went to a public school, so the second I answer, you can practically see the disappointment on their face. 🙃

Just quickly - if you live in the north or eastern suburbs they will also ask: oh you grew up here? To determine whether you’re just a renter living in an expensive suburb or if you are elite and were brought up there aka your parents are wealthy.

Sydney is very exclusive. It’s important to some what your social economic background is. Just a preference for some.

Sydney has a strong public/private, eastern/western surburbs, selective-school , catholic school divide unfortunately. People are curious about the environment you grew up in

As a Sydneysider born and bred - this has been happening for years. They ask this to see your social class (or your parents) they want to know if you went to an expensive school and are determining whether they want to associate with you or not.

It’s not a Sydney men thing it’s everyone. We do this and honestly I still do when I meet people of a similar age it’s to work out if you have any mutuals. Very normal to me.
