In the og story it’s bc he crossed the to the living world and assumed she was right behind him so she was”safe” but she didn’t cross to the living world and that’s why he looked back, bc he’s passed the barrier but didn’t know if she had yet. And assumed she had done so aswell

When i first heard of the story I already knew that it's a lose-lose situation for him. If he checks on her she stays. if he doesn't check on her but gets out of there and she's not, he can't come back to demand her a second time.
