Yes Paul was conman. He constructed narrative taking advantage of conflict in jewish community, he pulled out many jesus followers and added more from non-jewish. When there's sufficient people he went back with lots money to bribe remaining jesus followers to stay in Palestine so that migrating jesus followers plus non jews converter could come back as paul as leader. He initiated visiting jews temple by well known roman non jewish person as he knew he and his roman friend were protected by roman soldiers. As jews couldn't do anything to them they took revenged on jesus brother who was not protected.

When you look at Paul and James, they are actually preaching the exact same message about faith, but they are just explaining it from two different angles. Paul is focusing on how we are made right in the sight of God, who can see our hearts directly, whereas James is focusing on how our faith is proven to other people, who can only see our outward actions. Both apostles completely agree that true faith will always produce good fruit; they just use the word "justified" differently because Paul was writing to stop people from trying to earn their salvation through works, while James was writing to stop people from claiming they had faith when their lives showed absolutely no change. Ultimately, they complement each other beautifully, standing back-to-back like two soldiers defending the gospel against two opposite errors, ensuring that our faith remains both spiritually pure before God and practically visible to the world.
