I think parents (particularly past generations) are especially guilty of this one. Expect kids to respect them (like an authority) and the consequence is that they refuse to respect the kids (meaning treat them like persons).

ooh.. damn, it makes so much sense now. I was having problem with a guy who said, that I don't respect him. But I do. But for me it seemed all the time, that he just wants to be my boss... I see it now. still, I'm going to disrespect him from now on ant not to worry about respecting him since he wants an authority

Recently had someone yell at me that they deserved respect and I was confused af cause how exactly did I disrespect you? As they kept talking I realized they meant I wasn't deffering to them/their opinion over my own. Which was crazy cause technically I was their boss.
