wondering if anyone understands is a sentence i have been inside and i want to tell you something specific about what the wondering actually feels like from in there. it is not an open question. that is the thing. it presents itself as a question but by the time it has become the thing you are doing at 3am in the dark it has already started answering itself. the wondering has a lean to it. a direction it is already moving. and the direction is toward no. not dramatically. not in a way that would announce itself as despair or crisis or something requiring intervention. just a quiet lean. a slow accumulation of no that has been building from all the nights that passed without evidence of anyone understanding, all the mornings that arrived without the right words, all the conversations that got close and then didn’t, all the times you tried to describe the inside of the thing and felt the description land somewhere outside of it. and by 3am the wondering has accumulated enough lean that it is not really a question anymore. it has almost finished becoming a conclusion. and conclusions that form in the dark at 3am are stubborn. they do not respond to being told they are wrong. they respond to light. and the map is light. not a counterargument. not a reassurance. not someone telling you the answer to your question from the outside of it. the map is the lights coming on inside the conclusion itself and showing you what was already there before you finished forming it. every light a mom who understands. not because i am telling you so. because she is there. still awake. in the same dark. wondering the same thing and being answered by you. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
