For the past few years, I’ve had the enormous privilege of working with ceremonial horses. It’s been a huge part of my life, and something I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve cared for, trained and prepared horses for some incredibly demanding situations, taking enormous pride in ensuring they had the confidence and coping mechanisms to perform their jobs happily and safely. For a long time I shared this work online, but as my advocacy for equine welfare became more outspoken, it eventually became unsafe for me to publicly discuss my role. A few of you may have noticed all of those posts disappear overnight! A couple of weeks ago, I left my job and I’m finally going back to university, with the hope of pursuing a career in law and helping make the changes I believe are needed within our industry. Leaving has been incredibly bittersweet. This job has shaped so much of who I am, and I’ll always be grateful for the horses and experiences ♥️ My belief in kind, thoughtful training isn’t something I’ve just read about. I’ve lived it. If we can train a fleet of horses to parade through the middle of London, surrounded by crowds, noise and enormous amounts of stimulation, carrying swords, lances and flags… without screaming, shouting, hitting or fear, then I genuinely believe we can teach horses to do almost anything. I don’t believe kindness makes horses less capable. I believe it makes them capable of more. I’ve spent years learning how to help horses navigate the world we ask them to live in. Now, I want to help change that world ♥️ If you’ve made it this far, congratulations on reading my essay 🥲♥️ #horses #equine #equestrian #horsewelfare #horseriding
