This is one of the reasons girls go undiagnosed. They were taught to mimic societal expectations but now I'm realizing it's because other girls helped them mimic. 💜

I genuinely don’t like eye contact. I don’t make eye contact for more than a couple seconds with everyone. I want to be polite but it makes me really uncomfortable to make eye contact with people

Boy, it would have changed my life to have friends like this. the friends I had were also autistic little weirdos with no social skills. i had a friend in middle school who helped me figure a couple things out but I was a whole adult when I finally made some friends who tactfully taught me how to be a normal person. and by "I made friends", I mean they just adopted me.

So, I’m autistic, and no one taught me how to smile, but I was mocked and made fun of for it so often that I used to spend hours in front of the mirror, practicing exactly how to set my face so that my smile was more appealing. I used to walk on my tiptoes all the time, and once again was mocked for it. I masked so hard with my walking that I gave myself plantar fasciitis. Now I have to walk around the house in arched shoes.🙄🥺

I was nicknamed “popular with the unpopular” because I LOOKED like I’d be one of the preppy popular girls. But I found more comfort with the brains, nerds, goths, etc. I even volunteered with the special education classrooms a lot and had a frequent “buddy” who I was paired with. She’d sit next to me in class and she was non verbal, but I’d talk to her like I would anyone else. Anyway that AudHd diagnosis YEARS later made so much sense’

Looking back I think the ‘hot cheetos girls,’ realised I was autistic 15 years before I did. I always got along with them.

as the parent of a nonverbal autistic boy, I am so grateful to other kids who just take my son under their wing as a friend. Girls always do it the best though!!!

not a popular girl but when I don't have enough money for lunch (which everyday when in elementary) she'd give me enough money not to fill me, we don't talk anymore but I'm still grateful.

My best friend approached me on the first day our junior year of high school. I was new to the school. I used to hide in a back hallway and read during lunch. She kept inviting me to come sit with her and her friends. One day she found me and told me I could bring my book too. That I didn’t have to talk and I could just come read with them. She absolutely saved my life by deciding I was cool enough to have lunch with. I was terrified in a new city and a new school. To this day she’s still my best friend.

One of the popular girls saw me in tears in the bathroom because it was picture day and I had a terrible haircut, she whipped out some scissors and fixed it for me while telling me how nice I looked 😭😆 It’s been almost 20 years but I remember u girl 👌

The boss that everyone "hated" told me that my coworkers weren't nice to me when they make jokes, instead they made fun of me. I thought they were just including me. But no, they liked making me the butt of the joke because our clients liked me and never gave me shi. But my coworkers always get flamed by them. I eventually distanced myself from my coworkers and got headhunted by our clients to work on their team with a bigger raise and tbh less work.

Hot take- we’ve gone too far down the “we shouldn’t have to mask” rabbit hole- I say this a neurodivergent person- who studies people and their behavior for a living. Learning social skills is life changing for all us little weirdos (a badge I proudly still wear)

I’m autistic and almost completely socially incompetent, in my last year of school 2 people I knew who were more popular let me into their group and the popular girls started talking to me & showing me how to socialise & gossip , they have no idea how much of a boost to my confidence they provided, very grateful for all of them 🫶

My son is autistic and made a friend that is very popular that took him under his wing. My son developed confidence and became very well liked. He started jointing clubs and going out on outings. Neo….you changed his life and will forever be part of our core crew.

Not teenagers, but my autistic 3 year old started preschool this year. She has limited verbal skills and gets very frustrated when people don't understand what she's trying to communicate. There are two other preschoolers in her class that refuse to leave her side and are always playing with her and talking to her without ever making her feel rushed or getting upset. Because of those two kids, my daughter's speech has boomed so quickly and she has so much more confidence. This goes to show you, even 3 and 4 year old can make a world of difference just by caring. I want to cry every morning at drop off when they run up to her excited and happy and bring her to play with them.
