@manga.kai: Here are 7 tricks to help your drawing motivation: 1. Habit forming and the 21 Day rule. It takes 21 days to form a habit (of course, this can vary significantly from person to person). Instead of telling yourself that you will draw every single day for a year, just try to get through the first 3 weeks and the momentum will carry. 2. Lessen the goal each day. Stop telling yourself you’ll do an entire painting or page each time you sit down to draw. Instead, set a much smaller goal (ex. I’ll start this sketch)- 90% of the time you’ll go further than this because you’ve already done the hardest part- starting. 3. Checking off the boxes. As you draw, keep a notepad to the side of your workspace and check off boxes as you finish little areas of your drawing- this will train your brain to feel rewarded for taking the steps towards completing pieces. 4. Minimize distractions. Our phones and computers are easily the worst (and sometimes best) resource for us artists. We have infinite access to learning and references, but equally infinite reasons not to draw.. put it away OR Do Not Disturb on.. 5. Stop talking about the end product. Studies show that when you start talking about the end product (ex. “I will have a finished comic in X days”) then you’ve already given yourself part of the satisfaction of having completed the whole thing already. It can suck the motivation to actually sit down and take the steps towards the end goal feel impossible. 6. Rekindle the joy of drawing. Remember why you started- why you want to be an artist in the first place. Your younger self scribbled with crayons because creating makes us feel alive. It’s a privilege that we get to draw each day, not a chore or a task to do. 7. Go easy on yourself. This one can seem counterproductive, but it’s probably the single most important piece of advice I can give to those of you out there who are trying to optimize yourselves into a drawing machine. Please remember- you aren’t a robot, you’re a human being. You don’t need to exploit yourself into becoming perfectly productive.
