Now, there is finally life behind its doors again. Tanjong Ria Coffee has moved into this beautiful corner in the heart of George Town, turning it into an all-day spot where you can escape the Penang heat, grab a meal, have a cup of coffee, or simply take a break while exploring the heritage city. And don't let the word Coffee fool you—the menu here goes far beyond coffee and cakes. There is a surprisingly wide selection, from familiar Malaysian favourites like nasi lemak, ayam percik and asam pedas to eggs and toast, all-day breakfast, sandwiches, rice bowls, pasta, Western dishes and desserts. But what caught my attention was the story behind the name. Tanjong Ria didn't actually begin as a coffee shop. Back in 1990, Tanjong Ria Trading started as a small sundry shop in a quiet neighbourhood in Sabah. Behind the counter was a mother who had always imagined something more—a place where customers wouldn't just come to buy something, but could sit down, have coffee, talk and spend some time together. Years later, her son decided to continue that story. The shelves became tables, coffee was served, and Tanjong Ria Trading became Tanjong Ria Coffee—a way of bringing his mother's dream to life. And now, that story has found its way to this corner of George Town. A new café in an old shophouse, carrying a name that has been around since 1990.
