I’m sharing my story today in hopes that it might save a few lives. I raced motocross throughout my childhood, and at 16, I secretly found the title to my pickup truck in a filing cabinet, sold the truck, and came home with a Yamaha R1. That began a 20-year love affair with 1,000cc liter bikes. I did it all—caged stunt bikes, turbocharged Hayabusas with standalone ECUs, runs at the Texas Mile, and countless days at the track—but more than anything, I loved riding the streets. It was in my blood. Then my best friend died in my arms, choking on his own blood after a crash. A few years later, I watched another friend hold his wife in a bar ditch as she took her final breaths. Still, I kept riding. Five years ago, during a Sunday evening ride, I was dragging a knee through one of my favorite corners when a teenage girl, distracted by her phone, drifted nearly 75% into my lane. I was taking a 55-mph corner at around 115. My helmet came so close to her wheel well that the airflow nearly pulled me off the bike. I turned around, collected her side mirror, and rode home. I hung up my helmet and sold the bike five days later. I love riding just as much as anyone, but life is too precious, and the people who love you deserve to have you come home. Choose your life. Choose your family. Stay alive.
