Kai Tak Airport (Chinese: 啟德機場; pinyin: qide jichang) is the popular name of the former Hong Kong international airport, a title now held by Chek Lap Kok Airport since July 6, 1998. Its IATA and ICAO codes were HKG and VHHH, respectively, and are now also taken over by the new airport. The airport was once the hub of Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, and Air Hong Kong. Its only runway is Runway 13/31, which is 3,390 meters long and sits on reclaimed land. The History Channel program "Most Extreme Airport" ranked it the sixth most dangerous airport in the world. Kai Tak is located north of Kowloon Bay in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The airport is surrounded by mountains; less than 10 km to the north is a range of hills reaching 2,000 feet in height, while to the east of the runway are hills less than 5 km away. To the south of the airport lies Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island, with hills reaching 1,700 feet. Therefore, landing and takeoff at this airport were extremely difficult, as it had to pass over residential areas at very low altitudes. Furthermore, its operations had exceeded capacity. Consequently, in the late 1980s, the Hong Kong government sought alternative locations for a new airport. Chek Lap Kok Island, near Lantau Island, was ultimately selected. This relocation of airport operations occurred in a single, large-scale operation, beginning after the last plane landed at Kai Tak at 1:28 a.m. and ending before the first plane landed at Chek Lap Kok at 6:25 a.m. #kaitak #airport #aviation #boeing #fyp
