She was originally laid down before World War II but remained unfinished when France fell in 1940, forcing her to escape to Casablanca, Morocco. In 1942, Jean Bart was attacked by U.S. forces during Operation Torch and suffered damage from Allied aircraft and warships. Although she was still incomplete, her main guns were nevertheless able to return heavy fire. Afterward, Jean Bart joined the Allied side and was sent to the United States for plans to complete and modernize her. After the war, she returned to France and was finally completed in 1955, making her one of the last battleships ever completed in history.
