@spartanready: One of the hardest lessons in life is accepting that your heart is not a reliable measurement of somebody else’s character. When you’re naturally loyal, you tend to assume loyalty exists in other people. When you’re honest, you expect honesty. When you wouldn’t deliberately hurt somebody, you struggle to understand how somebody could deliberately hurt you. And that’s where a lot of your pain comes from. Not necessarily because you were stupid, not because you were weak, but because you were judging somebody else’s character through the standards you live by yourself. Eventually, you have to learn to separate who you are from who other people are. Your morals don’t guarantee somebody else’s morals. Your loyalty doesn’t guarantee somebody else’s loyalty. Your intentions don’t guarantee somebody else’s intentions. And your love for somebody doesn’t automatically make them worthy of your trust. That’s a brutal lesson, but it’s also an incredibly freeing one. Because once you stop expecting people to behave according to your standards, you become much harder to disappoint. You stop being shocked by behaviour that you’ve already learned people are capable of.
