Trịnh Thị Ngọ, better known by the moniker “Hanoi Hannah,” was one of the most recognizable voices of the Vietnam War. Born in 1931 in Hanoi, she studied English at university and began working in media during a time of rising tension between North Vietnam and the United States. With her fluent English and composed, articulate delivery, Ngọ became the leading voice behind Radio Hanoi’s English-language propaganda broadcasts aimed at American soldiers. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, she delivered hundreds of broadcasts intended to demoralize U.S. troops. Her scripts often included the names, units, and hometowns of American servicemen—details that gave her broadcasts an eerie, invasive quality. She routinely questioned the purpose of the war, highlighted U.S. casualties, and criticized racial and social injustices in America. Between messages, she played popular American music, blurring the line between comfort and psychological warfare. Though her broadcasts rarely led to measurable military outcomes, they became a persistent presence in the lives of many soldiers. While some dismissed her as propaganda, others admitted her messages unnerved them—especially when they seemed to correlate with nearby attacks. Following the end of the war, Trịnh Thị Ngọ lived a quiet life in Hanoi. She worked in translation and media, largely avoiding the spotlight. In later interviews, she maintained that her broadcasts were not intended to provoke hatred, but to persuade American troops to question their involvement and return home. She expressed admiration for American culture and music, even as she opposed the U.S. military presence in her country. Ngọ passed away in 2016 at the age of 85. Her legacy remains one of the most unique and complex examples of psychological warfare in modern history. #hanoihannah #vietnam #usa #History #fypシ
