I think, from what I’ve seen, people (Americans) think that every part of Japan is like the four major tourist destinations: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okinawa when in reality those very rural parts of Japan are very poor and suffering bc ppl are leaving the countrysides to seek out employment elsewhere. There is a revitalization project that has been trying to encourage young people/foreigners to move to these places to bolster tourism and their population but like you said, you HAVE to know Japanese bc these people may not be fluent in English. Also these house are *abandoned* and nine times out of ten, are properties that have to be ripped down and rebuilt anyways. I love Japan, I do want to move there when I’m ready but I’m also extremely realistic that if I want to live outside of major hubs, I have to know Japanese, have a tight budget and still be near some kind of tourist destination to be able to get a foreigner friendly job. I love this video n the dose of reality ur giving.

nobody ever talks about how if there's a big earthquake (likely in the next 30 years or so in several large areas of Japan) those old houses are fucked 😭

Also, as somebody who has lived in a semi rural Japan (a dying town of about 25,000 people), there is fucking NOTHING to do there. Do you enjoy socializing with people who aren’t retirees? Good luck. Do you enjoy doing activities that don’t require you to drive an hour away into the city? Good luck. Do you want the convenience of public transportation? Good luck. There’s a reason everybody leaves the rural areas, they fucking suck. I have never been so miserable in my life as the few months that I lived in the middle of nowhere Japan.

Lot of these houses still have all the old furniture and garbage in them too and my god getting rid of non everyday trash in Japan is a nightmare. I moved into an apartment that was furnished but I had to replace most of it cause it looked like a bar fight took place inside and everything was broken. Took me like half a year to finally get everything out because of how complicated the trash system in my area was. I had to schedule pick ups but they would only pick up one large piece of furniture at a time and would also only come once a month.

There’s someone I follow on YouTube who recently moved to a Japanese rural house. She’s been living in Japan for about 10 years now, used to live in a typical tiny apartment there. While the house seems okay, it definitely had issues with mold, pests, and overall structural issues. It’s a fixer upper, so eventually you’d be spending money to improve the home. I understand that Americans want to escape this country and move elsewhere, anywhere. But I hope they do their research before uprooting to different Asian countries in hopes of transferring their American dream there.

The only way I could see it is as a retirement thing, if you have a $500k nest egg you could potentially be able to retire there, where as in the US it's probably not enough. That said from what I've heard it's really hard to get a visa if you don't have a traditional career type job, so I imagine trying to get in as a retiree would be harder than a lot of other countries with similar CoL

This is why in my opinion based on my research if you can get a remote job that pays over a certain amount of USD per year, you can apply for a nomad visa. Which allows you 6 months at a time per year in Japan. Have you guys been to Japan in the summer? I think you could honestly skip it. 😅 yeah yeah I know where you going to stay in the states for the 6 months that you're not allowed in Japan. get a 6-month lease, or buy a trailer. I know you got to factor lot space, rent and utilities but like are brand new trailer was only like $600 a month for the payment.

The cost of living comparisons is a big thing people have issue understanding. Even happens when comparing cost of living in US vs Canada. While the prices might even out when you convert USD to CAD and seem affordable, Canadians are not earning in USD or at typical US salaries (which can be higher or lower depending on the profession).You do not get the currency conversion advantage when you are earning in the local currency and local salaries.

Not to mention all the recent changes/upcoming changes for PR, making it very hard to settle here. They don't want us to settle or retire here. I'm ok with making the low Japanese salary and living a modest life but imma be in trouble real soon if they raise that salary requirement. No ALTs or international teachers will ever reach that salary amount.

Just to add to that - a lot of those homes are empty for a reason! Depending on when they were built they could not be structurally sound (ie earthquakes) or they could’ve had a 💀 incident. If akiya were ideal places to live, the local Japanese would have already bought them.

People never mention not even houses this cheap but APARTMENTS because they don't meet modern earthquake codes. If its before 1981 I don't recommend your home or apartment has a significantly higher chance of getting damaged

I’ve lived in Japan for 26 years now my wife is a Japanese national we have a condo in central Tokyo I keep a home in Pennsylvania and we have a small place on my way which is sell them used be very careful about thinking you can move to Japan and there’s a reason that inexpensive homes are inexpensive

I have been traveling to Japan since 1998, I finally moved to a semi rural part of a smallish town. After living in US cities and suburbs all my life, living in this type of environment has been great! Peaceful and beautiful scenery. Managed to get a renewed house built in the 90s, added some additional work on the house to suit me and my Japanese wife, and I called it a day.
