Yet anyone who knows West African culture knows Oumou Sangaré is a Fulani woman from Mali, rooted in the Wassoulou region, spanning southern Mali, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire. Now that she’s world-famous, some deny her Fulani roots, as if international success changes her heritage. In their narrow-minded view, Fulanis are only associated with violence or crime, a harmful, ignorant stereotype. Ironically, these same people use her songs for clout while refusing to acknowledge her true identity. Singing in Bambara doesn’t make someone Bambara,Oumou has always sung in Fulfulde too, keeping her connection to Fulani culture alive through music and stories. Born on February 25, 1968, in Bamako to a Fulani family from Wassoulou, Oumou grew up immersed in her people’s traditions. Her mother, Aminata Diakité, worked tirelessly as a market trader, while Oumou sang in the streets to help support the family. By age five, she was already winning singing competitions. The Wassoulou region itself is a cultural treasure, blending Fulani, Bambara, and Mandinka traditions. It is known for Wassoulou music, soulful melodies, powerful female vocals, and traditional instruments like the kamalengoni and djembe. Its songs often celebrate love, resilience, and empowerment, values Oumou channels in her work. Historically, the region was part of the Wassoulou Empire founded by Samory Touré in the late 19th century, which resisted French colonial expansion while preserving local customs, languages, and Islamic practices. Oumou’s music and identity are deeply rooted in this legacy, making her not only a celebrated artist but a proud ambassador of Fulani and Wassoulou culture. And yes, some question why she doesn’t always sing in Fulfulde. She has, but she’s free to sing in any language she chooses. That doesn’t make her any less Fulani.
