@fashionablekittycatt: Many people assume a “rescue” operation means immediate safety, but the justice system often makes things much worse for trafficking victims. While Safe Harbor laws exist, most of them only protect minors from being arrested in the first place. Adult victims do not get that same protection. Police routinely arrest adult victims during raids for prostitution or drug charges, leaving them to navigate handcuffs, jail cells, and mugshots. To even get those charges dropped, the victim has to prove in court that they were being trafficked under duress, which is an extremely high bar to cross while sitting in a jail cell. On top of that, authorities sometimes seal arrest reports or place holds to prevent traffickers from bailing victims out. While the intent might be to cut off the pimp, it leaves vulnerable people trapped behind bars without access to real advocates or legal help. The system ends up treating the victim like a criminal, adding trauma and an arrest record to an already desperate situation. #humantrafficking #civilrights #polkcounty

i’ll never forget having to help a trafficking survivor through her immigration hearings because she was facing deportation for being trafficked (the exact threat that the traffickers used to keep her from running away or getting help)

It’s children too. They literally will just call a trafficked child an “underage prostitute”.

And when California proposed not doing that and instead faking the arrest and releasing them to hospitals, republicans went insane

decriminalization and actual social safety nets would prevent so much harm

There’s also no hold limit if they can’t verify your identity.. some women are still in custody from a huge overseas sting in Italy back in 2018.

I remember reading this article about a woman who had been trafficked. And i don’t remember the exact name but she was waiting for like a visa specifically for trafficking victims to seek asylum in the us, and had been I believe more than a year and at the time of the article she still hadn’t received it. And it’s insane to me that there are people who think it’s so easy to go through the “proper channels” to come to the us when trafficking victims can just be deported with zero remorse.

This girl I knew ended up in jail after she was being trafficked. She got clean and had to live in a safe house for a long time. She is so strong, I don’t know how she’s endured so much.

One time when I was 19 I left my group of friends because I was unmedicated and wandered off drinking… long story short this guy probably my age finds me and we chat, then the police show up across the field with flashlights looking around—he says we aren’t supposed to be there and we need to leave. “Want to come with me this way? I know a shortcut,” he says. My brain 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 a shortcut to WHERE?!!?!?! I told him my friends were waiting for me and I have to get back. I was probably being lured. This was in Ypsilanti

The biggest reason sw should be legalized honestly sw should be respected, but also anti sw laws are more often than not used to criminalize victims
