Yes we do, they are called prototaxites. They are really similar to trees but instead of getting energy from photosynthesis they got it all from the soil below. They went extinct soon After trees began growing. We know a lot about these things.

those are prototaxites and we actually have fossils of them. they were the one of the only organisms in this area besides very small patches of grass, moss, liverworts, and other simple plants that wouldnt pass your ankles due to not being able to have actual roots, leaves, etcetera.
