@thetimes: Elite universities have accepted more A-level pupils achieving the equivalent of BBB than A*AA in an attempt to fill the gap left by an exodus of high-paying international students. As pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland prepare to receive their A-level results on Thursday, the UK’s top universities — known as “higher tariff” institutions — have become more flexible for students who miss their grades or apply during clearing. Universities are accepting lower-achieving British undergraduates after a 10 per cent drop in international students, who pay up to seven times as much for a degree. Their departure, a result of tighter visa rules, Brexit, economic instability in key markets and growing competition from universities overseas, has left 55 universities with a total deficit of more than £500 million. The economic impact of the decline in foreign students is laid bare by Sunday Times research that gives the first comprehensive picture of higher education’s financial health. #universities #education #uni #internationalstudent #students

this is inaccurate reporting. The reason is because universities have been forced by government to lower entry requirements for state school students. Private school students still have to achieve a considerably higher grade. This is openly published on most university's websites on the entry requirements page.

These universities were accepting the same quality (lower grades) students from overseas…. So why not from uk now?

CCC is not the same as BBB or the same as AAA. “No evidence that standards have been lowered.” Yet the grades are clearly lower. Make it make sense

I looked around some of the current (1st or 2nd year) students at Oxbridge. Their overall profile is completely different than those graduated 10years ago.

Having an Elite degree is a problem. A degree should be a degree.

So unfair, education shouldn’t be tied to who has the most money—it is impossible for internationals to pursue their dream study in the uk 😏
