@ancienthistorytoday: Kailasa Temple, Ellora Carved directly from a single mass of volcanic rock, the Kailasa Temple at Ellora is one of the most extraordinary achievements of ancient Indian architecture. Created under the Rashtrakutas, primarily during the reign of Krishna I in the 8th century, the temple was designed as a monumental representation of Mount Kailash, the sacred home of Shiva. Unlike a conventional building assembled piece by piece, Kailasa was excavated from the rock itself. Craftsmen removed enormous quantities of stone from above and around the monument, gradually revealing a complete freestanding temple complex containing halls, shrines, pillars, stairways and monumental sculptures. Its walls are covered with scenes from Hindu mythology, while huge elephants appear to support parts of the structure at its base. Even after more than a thousand years, Kailasa remains a remarkable demonstration of the planning, organisation and craftsmanship of its creators. #KailasaTemple #ElloraCaves #AncientIndia #IndianHistory #AncientArchitecture

Ancient History Today :

The Kailasa Temple wasn’t built by stacking stone — it was revealed by removing it. The entire monument was carved downward from a single mass of rock, meaning the craftsmen had remarkably little room for major mistakes.
