President Trump signed a pair of executive orders on Thursday aimed at restricting birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court struck down his previous executive order seeking to redefine who is considered an American citizen. "We had a very unfortunate decision in the Supreme Court concerning birthright," he said in the Oval Office. "It was close, but a very, very unfortunate decision. So, we're making adjustments because it's very unfair." One of the orders seeks to ban so-called birth tourism, the practice of traveling to another country for the primary purpose of giving birth there so a child can obtain automatic citizenship. "What's happening now are people are building businesses around it. Wealthy people are building businesses around birthright citizenship," he said. "That's not the way it's supposed to work. It's a disgrace. They're buying their way in and we're not going to let that happen." Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, said the president has the authority to issue the executive order under a provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that governs the travel of noncitizens into and out of the country. "If you're telling a consular officer you're here as a tourist, but your true purpose and intent is to go to a baby mill, give birth, and try to mint an American citizen while you're here, then you're committing a fraud against the American government, and by definition, that visa can and should and will be now denied," he said. The other order expands the definition of who is considered ineligible for automatic citizenship to include, according to Mr. Miller, "alien enemies of the United States, members of foreign terrorist organizations and large categories of people who lobby and act on behalf of foreign governments." "It ensures that large numbers of people who wrongly would be getting birthright citizenship will no longer be eligible for those benefits," Mr. Miller said. #birthright #citizenship #tourism #executiveorder
