Those old Fords are notorious for having air in the clutch hydraulics. Which is probably part of the reason its hard to shift (even without a knob). Take the 10 minutes to bleed it and it will probably be much easier. Both me and my Dad had Fords when I was a teenager. We used to bleed ours every spring and fall.

In South Africa if you passed your driver's test in a manual you're allowed to drive both manual and automatic cars, if you passed your driver's in a automatic you're not allowed to drive manual on public roads. You will have to go pass your manual test.
