in one of my last conversations w my father i sent him videos on it to try and get him to understand. he replied saying that he couldnt watch any of them because the name was too whacked out and that no one would ever take it seriously because it such a horrible name…

These were the circumstances. This is what happened. These were the effects on me. This is how it made me feel. This is how I continue to feel. If I stay in this tight focus, there’s a lot of healing. Sharing this is important, but probably not with the architects of the circumstances or those behind the events. It’s not a moral judgment, it’s just focusing on what heals.

emotional incest is painfully accurate. enmeshment sounds a lot cleaner, a lot nicer. being honest about the feeling of what happened, in my option, is part of realizing and facing it.

"...because they cannot get over the name of it". She's expecting children to dumb things down so that the parents can handle it emotionally and won't get defensive. Sounds a lot like encouragement of parentification... It's walking on eggshells.

I agree- it sounds “bad” because it is. Even though it’s not sexual as often assumed, it does accurately describe emotional enmeshment

also, it is important to choose words that call out the power imbalance. Friends/ peers become emeshed (equally liable) but the emotional abuse a parent does TO a child is so much worse

to be fair i didn't say "shouldn't"! i was just wanting to talk about it! your point is fair and i'm sorry for not communicating clearly. just found that when i talked about enmeshment, it went well. parent googled and found "emotional incest", leading to conversation later devolving. so that was all

BINGO. The trauma of emotional incest is created through centering the parent's comfort. It's crucial we don't repeat that dynamic yet again in the naming of it.

they don't want to understand, they are intentionally extremely stupid. Name it for accuracy, think about yourself! you're so right.

Thank you. You cannot address something that you cannot name and pinpoint. The fact that some of us struggle with still thinking of the abuser first means we need this especially 😂
